The Lay Director’s Corner

Alan McPeak, Cursillo Lay Director for the Diocese of Colorado

By the time you read this Cursillos #107 (23-26 August) and #108 (7-10 November, 2002) will be over and Cursillo #109 will be coming up (15-18 May 2003). Cursillo #107 had 39 candidates who are now new Cursillistas and 36 team members. This is the largest group of new Cursillistas we have had for many years. Cursillo #108, held at the Easter Seal Camp near Georgetown, had 44 team and 34 candidates, now new Cursillistas. This was the first Cursillo at this facility and it works very well for a late fall weekend as the weather is changeable. It also has the best food of any facility that I have worked in Colorado. We had snow intermittently Friday through Sunday, but everything except lodging is in one building so being out in the elements is kept to a minimum. Meals, Rollo Room and the women on the team were in the main lodge. We were concerned how many people might be able to show up on Sunday with the snow but we had a very good turnout including a number of hardy souls who came over Loveland pass from the west.

Bishop Winterrowd celebrated the Eucharist at the Clausura and presented the National Episcopal Cross to the candidates for this weekend. This is the first time the Bishop has been able to participate in the Cursillo weekend here in Colorado. We have reserved this same facility for November of 2003.

Our last Secretariat meetings were 13 July in Alamosa, 14 September at St. Joseph’s in Lakewood and 23 November at St. John’s in Breckenridge. The September and November meetings were set to correspond with the Reunion Ultreyas from Cursillos #107 and #108. One of the subjects discussed at the September meeting was investigating a fifth Cursillo weekend in Colorado. This added weekend is primarily being driven by the increased numbers of candidates over the last two years. We started the mid-mountain Cursillo (November) one year ago and it is working very well in drawing candidates from areas that were remote from then-existing Cursillos, which was the hope when we started that Cursillo. The fifth Cursillo will probably be targeted toward Southern Colorado and probably be during the winter months. If the numbers of candidates continues to grow we will press ahead rapidly with planning for this new Cursillo. I will keep you posted as we move forward with feasibility studies for this new weekend. The November meeting incorporated a Secretariat Retreat in the morning to allow the Secretariat to get to know each other better. Fr. Praveen was the retreat leader.

. We move the meetings around the state so that you, the Cursillo community, can attend a meeting locally and meet us to discuss local issues. If you would like a Secretariat meeting in your area, or to volunteer your church as a meeting place, please contact Daphna Russell, our Ultreya and Fourth Day Coordinator, or any other Secretariat member. When setting up the Secretariat meeting if you can also coordinate an area Ultreya to meet after the Secretariat meeting, so much the better. To attend any Secretariat meeting contact any Secretariat member to get directions.

Next year (2003) we will have our annual meeting and elections at the convention since many of the convention delegates are Cursillistas and ACRC has ceased to function. Turnout for the annual meeting has been sparse at ACRC over the last two years so I think this change would have come whether ACRC had continued or not.

If any of you has any suggestions, please drop me a line on the Internet at mcpeakal@earthlink.net or by snail mail at 2240 Cloverdale Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80920.

CURSILLO 107, AUGUST 23-26, HIGHLANDS PRESBYTERIAN CAMP

I am the vine, you are the branches. ” John 15:5

Cursillo 107 was led by Joy and Bernie Maly, rectors, Wayne and Missi Kern, assistant rectors, the Revs. Frank Huber and Rick Kautz ,and Lynn Huber, spiritual directors, Jorge Darr, music director and Sue Richardson, head kitchen angel.

This Cursillo depended strongly on the vine, as, due to last minute emergencies, it didn’t have too many branches. The team of 36 members was outnumbered by 39 wonderful candidates. However, lots of prayer, hard work, great cooperation among team and candidates and the joy that is always found at a Cursillo made it an outstanding weekend. The new Cursillistas are:

CURSILLO 108, N0VEMBER 7-10, EASTER SEAL CAMP

Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Based on this passage from Matthew, Cursillo 108 took root and a spirit-filled weekend was experienced by the 34 candidates and 42 team members who attended the weekend. This was the first experience at the Easter Seal Camp in Georgetown which proved to be an excellent facility to hold a weekend in the mountain region. Lay leader Joan Stewart of St. Matthew’s Grand Junction, was assisted by Dawn Simpson, Monte Vista, Jason Purvis, Trinidad, Helen Van Roggen, Salida and an exceptional team. The Rev. Canon Kelsey Hogue was the head spiritual dude with the Rev. Scott Campbell, the Rev. Sarah Freeman and the Rev. Joe Forinash assisting with the spiritual dudes’ responsibilities. Thirty-five congregations in the Diocese were represented as well as a participant from Wyoming. The weekend was highlighted with Bishop Jerry Winterrowd blessing and handing out the National Cursillo Crosses to the new Cursillistas at Clausura. We welcome the new Cursillistas, who are:

COLORADO CURSILLO WEBSITE

Mickey Jackson, Cursillo Webmaster, reports that the web page is up and operating correctly. The address has changed because the new web page address is not tied to any church. The new address is http://www.cocursillo.org. The old address will still work, but the new one is more direct and more easily found when searchingon the net.

Currently Colorado’s Cursillo web page allows you to download or print the latest application and other forms, read the latest two or three issues of Crowing Times and it lists up-coming events such as future Cursillos, Days of Deeper Understanding (DODU) and Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshops (ECLW—see information about the next ECLW in the issue.) You can also find names and ways to contact any of the Secretariat members and find links to other fourth day communities on the web page. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the web page, contact the Cursillo Webmaster or any Secretariat members.

The DODU, listed on the web site for October, is a regular feature of most Cursillo communities across the country. A DODU is a one-day meeting at a church in the Diocese with five talks, music and food. The purpose is to reinforce the Sunday message of the weekend which can, sometimes, get lost for the candidates in everything else that is going on.

EPISCOPAL CURSILLO LEADERS’ WORKSHOP

May 30-June 1 Highlands Presbyterian Retreat Center Allenspark , Colorado

WHAT IS A LEADER?

A leader, clergy or lay, is one who influences his/her environment.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Anyone interested in working on a Cursillo weekend team; Cursillistas who wish to explore a servant leadership role within the Cursillo movement; those who want a better fundamental understanding of the Cursillo Movement.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS?

  1. To clarify the purpose and method of the Cursillo Movement
  2. To provide a background on the intent of the Cursillo founders
  3. To give people involved a clearer understand of their roles
  4. To learn about the tools available to make the Cursillo Movement an effective instrument in the work of the church
  5. To help various Diocesan Cursillo Movements find ways to be more effective
  6. To help people deepen their commitment to Christ.

WHAT HAPPENS?

There are talks with a leader to better understanding of the scope and depth of the Cursillo movement and its relationship within the church. There are times of sharing, fellowship, worship, singing, teaching, learning .

What it is NOT is another Cursillo three-day weekend or a repeat of the weekend talks.

WHO LEADS AN ECLW?

The team selected by a district coordinator working with the national movement consists of three or four persons including a priest. The host community provides persons to serve as table leaders, music leaders and support staff.

WHEN, WHO, WHERE

Highlands Presbyterian Retreat Center at Allenspark near Estes Park—the new facility is ideal for the workshop and we’re excited about using it.

Neighboring dioceses are also encouraged to send people. This sharing and linking is beneficial to the Cursillo Movement as a whole. The workshop begins Friday evening and ends Sunday afternoon .

WHAT IS THE COST?

$110 per person. This includes all workshop materials (except the NEC Library) housing and meals. All persons attending the workshop are required to bring an NEC Library which can be purchased from the National Episcopal Cursillo (NEC) office, phone 1-877-858-7392 (1-877-ULTREYA). Cost for the library is $25 or $30.

For more information, please contact: Martha Libby, 303-690-1112, e-mail: Mlibby4444@attbi.com or Joy Maly, Ph: 303-988-7339; e-mail: jbmaly@aol.com .

FROM THE EDITOR

It is very gratifying to publish the long lists of new Cursillistas from Cursillos 107 and 108, to read about the good things happening in the Four Corners and Alan’s letter about the possibility of yet another Cursillo weekend (making five) for the Colorado Diocese.

But the question is always raised: "After the weekend, what?"

I love the weekends. When I used to hear “but the Fourth Day is the most important” I’d not pay too much attention and go on making plans for the next big weekend. I was lucky enough to belong, for years, to a church where others took the responsibility and planned Reunions and Ultreyas so I could attend without much effort.

And Reunion groups and Ultreyas take effort. It’s a lot easier to function within the cozy confines of a weekend than gather everyone up when you’re back out in the world.

So it was really encouraging two weeks ago when I and a lot of others involved in Cursillo 107 got two e-mails from Ty Hashimoto, e-mail: hashimotokol@hotmail.com a new Cursillista from Cursillo 107 who is doing something about it. Ty wrote: "I just wanted to send you all a message and let you all know that Cursillo #107 rocks. My vision is to expand and grow the 4th day community. . .some of you were pumped and excited at Cursillo and came home to no group to grow with and thus the excitement died.

"I’m working on building up the 4th day community and expanding in our church (Christ The King) and am looking at building up Ultreyas and groups across the Denver area, then into the state of Colorado. . . if any of you want to know or lead or partake in this venture please let me know.

"I am so excited to let you know that we have a 4th day group going on Sundays at noon in one of the classrooms. If you might be interested in a 4th day group on Thursday evenings let me or Debbie Wilson know. Her e-mail is moodring99@hotmail.com."

YOU GO, TY!

NEW TREASURER

Sue Emerson, Grand Junction, will serve as the new Secretariat treasurer, replacing Jean Talman , Colorado Springs, who served long (five years) and faithfully. She had asked to step down, so the transition in the office happened this last fall.

The Secretariat still has job openings for a librarian/supply person who would be responsible for creating and updating the Lay Leaders’ and Head Kitchen Angel’s notebooks and order supplies from the National Episcopal Cursillo such as reunion cards, rollo workbooks etc.

Also needed are one or two more photographers to cover events in Colorado. They will work in coordination with Helen Van Roogen to cover the diocese. Any volunteers please contact Alan McPeak.

COMMUNICATIONS UPDATE

Bernie Maly , St. Josephs, is the new Communications Director on the Secretariat and he is implementing plans to increase and improve communications in this far-flung diocese.

Included are:

  • Parish Representatives: people from each parish who would keep Cursillistas in the parish informed. This would include passing along e-mails or mailing information to those without e-mail about Cursillo related activities and other Cursillo information. Already Cursillistas from 17 parishes have responded. Volunteers may e-mail Bernie at jbmaly@aol.com or call: 303-988-7739 (home) or 303-866-8466 (work).
  • Increasing the number of articles about reunion groups, Ultreyas , spiritual disciplines etc., and including lay witness type articles from new Cursillistas or anyone who feels led to write one in The Crowing Times. To do this communicate with Bernie or Nancy Hause, 737 Sanborn Dr., Estes Park, 80517, ph. 970-577-0327, e-mail, Rnhause@cs.com.
  • Bernie also wants to increase the Colorado Servant Community.
