Lay Director's Report
By: Alan McPeak, Cursillo Lay
Director for the Diocese of Colorado
By the time you read this Cursillo
#105 (1-4 November 2001) will be history and Cursillo #106 will be coming up in
May of 2002. Cursillo #105 had 23 candidates who are now new Cursillistas and
21 team members. The Cursillo was truly
awesome, as so many of them are, but got off to a rocky start with the death of
one of the sponsors on Thursday night. God transformed this into a wonderful
beginning for the weekend. The sponsor 's
candidate stayed for the weekend and the whole team and candidates were greatly
moved by the weekend 's series of events.
Upcoming Secretariat meetings for
the next six to nine months are being planned now (see cover.) . If
you would like a Secretariat meeting in your part of the State of Colorado,
please let us know. All of the meetings
start at 12 noon and last until 3 PM and any Cursillista is welcome at the
meetings. If you would like to volunteer to have a Secretariat meeting at your
church contact Daphna Russell, our Ultreya and Fourth Day coordinator, or any
other Secretariat member. If you can coordinate an area
Ultreya to meet after the Secretariat meeting, so much the better. To attend any Secretariat meeting contact me
or any other Secretariat member to get directions.
Mickey Jackson, Cursillo web
master, says that the web page is up and operating correctly. The address is http://www.sttims.net/cocursillo/. There will eventually be a button on the
Diocesan web page labeled Cursillo that will take you to our web page when
the diocesan web master finishes it.
We also have several more servant community
openings that we need volunteers to fill.
These are specific projects for Cursillo here in Colorado. If you feel called to any of these jobs
please contact any of the Secretariat members. Ed and Helen Van Roggen will be Cursillo photographers/historians for
Colorado. Helen will be asking people for their old Cursillo records over the
next year or so. Examples might be, but
aren 't limited to: Cursillo number, Lay
Leader, who gave what rollos,
team and candidate lists, theme of weekend, new things tried and how they
worked etc. We would appreciate it if
you have any Cursillo records that you contact Helen and Ed at (719)530-0538
and let them know what you have.< style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>
Now, on to some
of the other things that have happened since the last Crowing Times. At the March and November meetings of the Secretariat we looked at
the financial position of Cursillo in Colorado and realized that we have lost
money on every weekend in the last two years.
In some cases it was aggravated by some people not paying their fees or
paying for their candidates so we changed the procedure for the August and
November Cursillos to not accepting applications without the fees
included. Even when everyone has paid,
we have still lost money,
so we have been forced to evaluate the fees that we are charging
for the weekends. We took a preliminary
look at the finances at the November Secretariat meeting and another look at
the January meeting to reach a decision for 2002. We will publish the fees for next year 's
Cursillos as soon as possible.
We are designing a Cursillo Poster
similar to the one that we published last year.
We have made some improvements in the information on the poster to show
at a glance which Cursillos are in which area and who the Secretariat contact
is for Cursillo. We have also left room
for a local Cursillista to enter his or her name so that people have someone
that they know to contact about Cursillo and arrange for sponsorship. If you have any other suggestions about the
poster, contact anyone on the Secretariat (contact list is elsewhere in this <
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Crowing Times) and they can pass
the comments on to the whole Secretariat.
If any of you has any suggestions,
please drop me a line on the Internet at mcpeakal@earthlink.net
or by snail mail at 2240 Cloverdale Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80920.
De Colores,
Alan

Cursillo #105
Each Cursillo has its own
story and different experiences and #105 was no exception. The gathering of the
Team from around the state turned out to be a real tactical challenge. We were
finally all together in the same place at the same time at the Team Eucharist,
just prior to candidate arrival. So we not only prayed for the weekend, but met
each other, some for the first time.
As the Rectora for the
weekend, I could not appreciate this team more. The individuals may have come
together late, but when it came to working as a team, they stepped right up to the challenge. Especially when I was called away on
the first evening to handle a tragedy that occurred just as the weekend was
starting when one of the sponsors suffered a fatal heart attack.
The setting at Camp
Redcloud near Lake City is marvelous and the food and the staff are wonderful,
but it did present some challenges for the Mountain and Plains folk. We shall
be eternally grateful to Father Ed and his wife, Mary, for providing the Chalet
to both candidates and sponsors who needed a place to wait. Without the
Nettletons help, having a Cursillo at Redcloud would be almost impossible.
I will not go into how the
weekend truly was spirit filled here. It progressed with a great deal of faith
on the part of all of us. The Praying, Playing, Praising Priests, Plus Two
provided music that was awesome. None of us will ever forget Father John 's
rendering of Watch for the Lamb at the end of the Stations of the Cross. The
candidate list appears in another spot in this CT.
All in all it was a
glorious weekend. Believe it or not, everyone got some rest each day and that
proved to be wonderful for all. Watch for the schedule of the 2002 Cursillos,
and share in one near (or from) from you.
De Colores
and Ultreya,
Marj Rust

Cursillo #106
My
name is Sue Emerson and I get to be Lay leader of Cursillo #106. I had indicated to my husband, Dave, that I would like to do this after the Ultreya
following the Cursillo he led. At that Ultreya I felt strongly that God wanted
me to lead the next May Cursillo. I was one of his assistant leaders and
through the entire process, when asked if I 'd lead the next Cursillo or the one
after that, I would say, NO! I am not ready. . . God
has always worked like this in my life. When I say NO! , He says, you wanna bet,
and my heart does a turn around. When will I learn to check with Him before I
say NO! ?
I
have chosen Take up your cross and follow me Mark 8:34-35 as the theme for
the weekend. The entire verse is If anyone would
come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For
who ever loses his life for me and for the gospel will
save it.
The
dates for the Team meetings are February 23, March 16 and April 20, 2002.
Location for the April Team meeting is in Grand Junction, locations for the
remaining Team meetings will be announced.
Cursillo
#106 is scheduled for May 16 19, 2002 at Camp Red Cloud (a mere 18 minutes from beautiful
downtown Lake City, CO).We are in need of Team members and Candidates. But
first and foremost we need your continued prayers for the Candidates, and those
in discernment about attending, the Team and the Staff at Camp Red Cloud. Anyone and everyone is welcome and
encouraged to come to our Las Mananitas at 6:00 a.m.
and Clausura at 4:00 PM. . on Cursillo Sunday.

The
Core Team for Cursillo #107, is largely formed and had
its first meeting on Saturday, February 16 at St. Joseph Episcopal Church in
Lakewood. Much of the agenda for the day
consisted of training for the Core Team members, which was conducted by Martha
Libby, team trainer for the Secretariat. There was much excitement among those
attending and much enthusiasm and anticipation for further training and for the
upcoming Cursillo. This training and team are preparing for the annual Cursillo
for the front range area which will be held on the
last full weekend of August, August 22-25. Also, as has been the case each
summer in recent years, the Cursillo will be held again at the Presbyterian
Highlands Ranch Camp at Allenspark, Colorado. Theme
of the weekend is I am the vine, you are the branches, (John 15:5).
Rector
and Rectora for the weekend are Bernie and Joy Maly.
Other Core Team members at this point include Wayne and Missy Kern, assistant
Rector and Rectora from St.Martin-in-the-Field,
Aurora; Jorge Darr, Music,from
Christ the King, Arvada; Sue Richards, Kitchen, St. Martin-in-The-Field, Aurora; Rita Stalnaker,
Palanca from St. Alban 's, Windsor and the Rev. Frank
Huber and Lay Minister Lynn Huber, Spiritual Directors, both of St. Joseph in
Lakewood.
Team
meetings through the summer have been scheduled. The dates are:
April
13, St. Joseph, Lakewood (Core Team only); May 11, Christ the King, Arvada;
June 1, St. Joseph, Lakewood; June 22, Christ the King, Arvada; July 20 St.
Martin-in-the-Field, Aurora; and August 10 again at St. Joseph. Applications
are being welcomed from individuals wanting to serve on the team.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU New
members of the secretariat:
Twyla Zittle
Hi! My name
is Twyla Zittle and I was
asked to fill Marj Rust's position on the
Secretariat. I 'm honored to be able to serve even though I didn' t know, until
my first meeting, that I'd agreed to be the secretary! If I'd read my Crowing
Times more carefully, I would have known!
I had the
privilege of serving on Cursillo #105 under Marj' s
leadership. I was a bit nervous about serving because I made my Cursillo (#30)
21 years ago and hadn 't worked on a team since 1984. The idea of having a
Cursillo in our part of the diocese was really exciting and part of what drew
me to offer to serve on the team.
Being on the
team was a wonderful experience, filled with many God moments during the
weekend. I met lots of amazing folks both team and candidates, most of who are
rural Episcopalians like me.
I've been a
member of three Episcopal congregations in Colorado, having spent most of my
time here in Alamosa as a part of the Episcopal Mission of the San Luis
Valley St. Thomas. When I moved here, I was one of three Cursillistas and now
we have about a dozen!
When we had
our first team meeting and Marj introduced us to the
theme song, I wasn 't so sure, but I hear that song all of the time now! Marj, it grows on you! Hand in hand, dear Jesus, all along
the way . . . Cursillo is a wonderful opportunity to introduce people to the
love of Christ and I ve said more than once that I think that team members get
as much or more out of the weekend than the candidates do.
Sharing the
love of Christ is what we are all called to do.
I am truly blessed to live where I live, and have had many opportunities
to serve our Lord in this place. I
wouldn 't trade my church family for anything they have seen me through the joys
and sorrows of my life and have loved me through it all. I 'm delighted to be
able to serve you all on the Secretariat for a time and look forward to meeting
you!
De Colores,
Twyla
GETTING TO KNOW YOU New members of
the Secretariat (cont.)
Missi (Melissa) Kern
Hello. My name is Melissa Kern, but most people call
me Missi. I am
married to Wayne Kern (for nine and one half years), and we have two adorable
children, Brandon (eight years) and Mikayla (five
years). Although I was born in Abilene,
TX, I am justified in saying that I am a Colorado native. It was solely due to the Air Force that I was
not born in this wonderful State. My
family is firmly grounded in the Denver area.
My great-grandmother moved here from Wyoming when she was three years
old. My grandmother and her two sisters
are natives, as are my mother and her sister.
I have lived in Aurora most of my life, graduating from Aurora Central
High School in 1985. After that I
attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where I earned my Bachelor
of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in
Accounting.
We
are also a family of cradle Episcopalians .
I don 't recall going to church regularly until I was in middle
school. At that time we were members of
St. Peter 's Episcopal church in Denver. (This was a few years before the marriage of
St. Peter 's and St. Mary 's). I was very
active in the youth group, summer camp at Trinity Ranch, and was also an
officer of the Diocesan youth committee my senior year of high school. I also attended a Regional Youth Event in
South Dakota, and a National Youth Event in Stillwater OK. Wayne and I currently attend church at St.
Martin-In-The-Fields in Aurora, where I am active in the choir and am a Middle
School Youth Group leader.
Cursillo
is very important to me because it began a conversion process for me. My life in Christ has changed drastically
since I made my Cursillo. Before I went
to Cursillo #102 in 2000, I didn 't know what it meant to have a relationship
with Jesus Christ. I had never
understood, before then, the need for individual prayer and study. I am now very active in a reunion group,
which I believe is essential to maintaining our relationships with Christ. I believe that Cursillo changed the course of
my life and that is why I feel called to become as active in this ministry as I
can. I very much look forward to serving
on the Colorado Secretariat and working with the rest of the team to grow this
program even more than it has. Wayne and
I will also be serving as Assistant Rector and Rectora for Cursillo #107 at Allenspark this August.
I look forward to meeting all of you throughout the coming year (or
two).

Daphna Russell
I
am Daphna Russell Smith Rost, legally, although I go
by the first two names when I am in the sculpture studio. I attended Cursillo
in the fall of 1982 at Glenwood Springs and have worked a few since, encouraged
others to go, and generally have been around the block. I attribute great
changes in my life to that Cursillo. God has blessed me with a life that comes
closer and closer to Him. I have learned to see Him working in my life and many
others lives. I thank Him for allowing me to see that and to realize that I do
not have to be perfect, only follow and receive what he has for me which is so much more than I could ask for myself. I consider
myself the archetypal little old lady in tennis shoes. I work to use my gifts
to the glory of His name by sculpting power angels in the Christian
tradition.

Joan Stewart, Rectora, reports that the core team for #108
is being selected. She plans to have three assistant lay leaders. Dawn Simpson
and Helen Van Roggen have already agreed to serve.
Laura Shaffer will be head table leader and Kelsey Hogue will be a spiritual
leader. Ed VanRoggen will head the palanca team and Tom and Tammy Kenning will lead the music
team. A theme and place for #108 have not yet been decided.

The Mountain and Western Regions are purchasing
a trailer for storing and transporting Cursillo supplies. To date, $1000 of the
anticipated $2500 has been raised. The Rev. Kelsey and Debbie Hogue donated
$500 and a grant from the Colorado Episcopal Foundation matched the seed money.
In the past, the supplies used on the weekend
have been stored in various churches, storage units and basements. A trailer
would provide a permanent location for storage and allow the teams to take
supplies to team meetings when needed. If you can give a small donation, or a
large one, it would be greatly appreciated. Please mail donations to PO Box
3942, Grand Junction, CO 81502.

Cursillo - Day of Deeper Understanding
The purpose of a Day of Deeper Understanding is to assist our local Cursillo
community to strengthen our understanding of the role of the Cursillo Movement
in the living out of our Baptismal Vows.
We need to better understand that Cursillo is more than a wonderful
weekend experience with God. It provides a structure for a lifetime experience
of Christian love and Service. A Day of
Deeper Understanding addresses:
-
The role of the Movement in the Church
- The structure of the Movement, locally and
nationally
- How to use the Cursillo Method: Group Reunion,
Ultreya, Spiritual Direction, and Rule of Life
- The Three Day Weekend and its relationship to
the Pre-Cursillo and the Fourth Day
Because the Sunday message of the Cursillo weekend focuses
on propelling us into the Fourth Day, a complete understanding of the Sunday
teaching is essential. Let 's face it, most of us miss the Sunday message. The way we know that message has been missed
is by taking a look at ourselves and our Christian community: Do you see any of the following symptoms:
- Poor attendance at Ultreyas
- Failure to join reunion groups
- Failure to develop a Rule of Life
- Failure to establish a relationship with a
Spiritual Director
Causes for the lack of understanding of Sunday 's message are
common to the movement.
- The intense mental and emotional activity of the
weekend
- The tendency to overload weekend schedules
leading to the lack of proper rest
- The very busy schedule
- The surprises and the fun
- The anticipation of going home to loved ones
- Etc.
The Day of Deeper Understanding (DODU) is scheduled for
Saturday, July 27 at St. Martin in the Fields/Aurora. There is a $20 fee to help defray expenses
for materials and meals. The format is
the familiar format for the Cursillo weekend.
There will be speakers, five talks, discussion, artistic responses,
music, and of course, food! Martha Libby
will be the Lay Director for the activities.
If anyone is interested in participating on the team, please call Martha
at 303-690-1112. If you are planning to
attend, please fill out the application and send it along with your fee to the
address on the form.

This is a double issue (winter/spring) because there is so
much going on in the Colorado Cursillo Community and we wanted to include as
much of it as possible. To complain about all the activity is like complaining
about being too beautiful you shouldn 't fuss about great stuff. The enthusiasm
for Cursillo in Colorado is growing all the time. And that 's a beautiful thing.

Speaking
to the National Cursillo Conference at Camp Allen, Texas last October, Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold told those
in attendance that God is our work and God says I am
loving you through the members of my body.
Over
the years, he said I
have come to the conclusion that Christ is counting on me not simply for what I
do, but to be a companion, someone who, in a deep and intimate way, travels
with Him. In that way, he said Christ allows his life to become my life, his
hopes and desires for the world to become my hopes and desires. In that Christ
is counting on me to be a faithful and intimate companion.
Griswold reminded the conference participants
representing 47 dioceses, that Christ 's prayer on the eve of his crucifixion
was that he had completed the work You have given me.
It is finished, completed, accomplished. And that work is described by Jesus
as drawing all things to God.
That is where we come in, Griswold said. God 's mission is the reconciliation of all things
to God 's own self in Christ through the Agency of the Holy Spirit. . . .the mission of
the church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.
The mission is to participate in God 's work. -Courtesy Episcopal News Service-

At Cursillo #104 last August in Allenspark
several of the candidates asked for a translation of De Colores.
This particular translation comes from a Spanish speaking Cursillista with some
explanation about the song.
Translation
of De Colores
How
colorful, how colorful are the fields in the springtime!
How
colorful, how colorful are the little birds that come from afar!
How
colorful, how colorful is the rainbow we see come into view!
Chorus: And for this my great love of colorful
things, I 'm very happy!
The
rooster crows, with his Kiri-kiri-kiri-kiri!
The
hen cackles with her Kara-kara-kara-kara!
The little chicks peep with their Pio-pio-pio-pi!
Chorus: And for my great love of colorful things, I 'm very happy!.
VIVA! To LIFE!
This
is not an overtly religious or Christian song, but one in praise of the
earth 's beauty, and the innocence and simplicity of childhood. It 's essentially a children 's song which all
Spanish speaking children learn, and as adults they still sing with great energy
and gusto unlike us and our adult treatment of all things childlike! Hispanic
people have very close family relationships, and since adult life is often very
difficult--especially in poorer countries, everyone makes the effort to make of
childhood a most care-free, magical time.
To us they sometimes appear to be a bit over-indulgent with their
children. The song highlights a
spiritual joy in small, simple things a feature of this beautiful culture that get 's lost with our American pre-occupation with
materialism and status, busyness and worry.
The
song really captures the spirit of Cursillo: enjoyment of the out of doors,
simplicity and innocence before God, colors and art, spontaneity, uninhibited
singing and dancing, becoming a spiritual family with all the hugs and
emotional freedom, and the emphasis on the first things of the Christian
faith. For I tell you, that unless you
become as children, you will not see the kingdom of God!
