The Lay Director’s Corner

Alan McPeak, Cursillo Lay Director for the Diocese of Colorado

By the time you read this Cursillo #109 (15-18 May 2003) will be over. At this point I don’t know how many candidates we will have but we will have the ones that God sends to us. Jan and David Smith are the Rectors for this weekend and should have a final article in the fall Crowing Times.

On a different subject, the Four Corners Area will probably not have a Cursillo this year. The servant community there feels that it needs some time to reflect and discern where God is leading it. The May Cursillo has two team members from that area and will probably have several candidates.

The Secretariat elections this year will be during the Diocesan Convention in Denver. While October seems far away, we need to be planning now as we have seven of the Secretariat up for re-election or replacement. The Secretariat consists of 10 lay people and two spiritual advisers appointed by the Bishop for a total of 12 voting members. We also have a non-voting treasurer, appointed by the Board.

We will have four members running for re-election for a second term of two years, we will have one rotating off, having served four years, and two choosing not to run for re-election. Therefore, we will need three new people running for the Secretariat in addition to those running for re-election.

Since I am the one rotating off the board, I will cover the process of choosing a new board and Lay Director as per the bylaws. After the elections the Secretariat meets and elects a new Lay Director and then each person chooses a position on the board. If you feel that you would be willing to serve on the Secretariat contact me or any member of the Secretariat so you can be put on the ballot. Please also include some information about yourself and what experience you have in Cursillo so we can put it on the ballot along with your name. I can provide job descriptions of Secretariat positions if you want to contact me.

At the last Secretariat meeting, 15 March in Craig Colorado, we discussed how we could improve the visibility of Cursillo in the Diocese. A suggestion was put forward, that since we will be having our elections during the Diocesan Convention, we should request all Cursillistas wear rainbow colors, their Cursillo Crosses and Palanca (chicken) Shirts, if you have one, at the convention. I know that probably half of the delegates to convention have been to Cursillo so this would be a good time to show the colors, especially since we are in the process of choosing a new Bishop for Colorado.

Mickey Jackson, Cursillo Webmaster, says that the web page is up and operating correctly. The address has changed because we now have a web page address that is not tied to any church. The new address is http://www.cocursillo.org. The old address will still work, but the new one is more direct and more easily found when searching on the net, a boon to Cursillistas moving into Colorado. Currently our Cursillo web page allows you to download the latest applications and forms, read the latest two or three versions of the Crowing Times, lists of coming events like future Cursillos, Days of Deeper Understanding (DODU), and Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshops (ECLW). You can also find the names and ways to contact any of the Secretariat members and find links to other fourth day communities. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the web page, contact the Cursillo Webmaster or any Secretariat member. If any of you has any suggestions, please drop me a line on the Internet at mcpeakal@earthlink.net or by snail mail at 2240 Cloverdale Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80920.

De Colores,

Alan

A NEW SPIRITUAL ADVISER

Fr. Rex Chambers, St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church, Breckenridge, has been named a new spiritual adviser to the Secretariat, replacing Fr. Praveen Bunyan who recently accepted a call to a new church in California.

FROM FR. REX:

By way of introduction, I’m Father Rex Chambers, from Breckenridge. Along with Father Ed Nettleton, I serve as one of your spiritual directors for Cursillo in the Diocese of Colorado.

My wife and I made our Cursillo in 1975, in a small town in Oregon. We could have been poster kids for the "Frozen Chosen." Like your Cursillo weekend, ours was very special, and it has become the foundation for our activity in the church. The lady who sponsored my wife and me said, "Welcome to the silly grin club!"

Over the years my wife and I have worked more Cursillo weekends than we can count or remember. The one common thread that ran through all of them was seeing the life changing experience of meeting Jesus Christ in ordinary people like you and me.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Today, Cursillo of Colorado needs your financial support, not only for scholarships, but also funds to help defray the cost of administration, mailings and supplies.

The Cursillo movement is very important not only to the life of the church. It is important for Christians who have lost their way, or need redirection. Please, look into your heart and send a donation of love to keep the silly grin club going.

AND WE STILL NEED . . . .

A LIBRARIAN! This person would be responsible for creating/updating the Lay Leaders’ and Head Kitchen Angels’ notebooks and ordering supplies from National Episcopal Cursillo, such as 4th Day Reunion Cards, Rollo Workbooks, etc. It would make the teams’ jobs much easier if they had a current, up-to-date documentation and didn’t have to order supplies while they are trying to get ready for a weekend.

We also need one or two more PHOTOGRAPHERS to cover events in Colorado.

Any one interested in either of these jobs can contact Alan McPeak at mcpeakal@earthlink.net or at 2240 Cloverdale Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

New Secretariat Members

F. Neil Folks

I replaced Scott Stewart as the Secretariat Special Projects Coordinator as of August 2002 and I will be busy attempting to fill his shoes. Scott travels at a fast pace. I did my Cursillo #103, May 2001, at Camp Redcloud, outside of Lake City. I worked my first Cursillo #104, in August 2001, at the Highlands Presbyterian Camp, Allenspark, and second Cursillo #105, Camp Redcloud, in November 2001, the first winter Cursillo. Most of my work was as a Kitchen Angel (and other duties assigned,) Palanca rabbit and I gave the Leaders Rollo at #105.

I originated from the farms/ranches of the flatlands of southwest Kansas in Ashland (Gunsmoke Country,) attended Ft. Hays State University, Hays, KS, where I received my B.S. in Range Management, 1961. From there I went to Utah State University, Logan, UT, where I completed my M.S. degree in Wildlife Research, 1965. I hired on in 1967 as the Waterfowl Research Biologist and Project Superintendent for the Brown’s Park Waterfowl Management Area for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and also served in the capacity as a Conservation Officer. I remained in these positions for 33 years from which I retired in July 2000. I moved to Craig from God’s Acre.

I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church. I left it in 1965, spent some time in the LDS Church of which my former wife was a member and joined the Episcopal Church, St. Mark’s, Craig, in 1998. I consider myself a "diaper" Episcopalian. I was asked to be on the St. Mark’s Bishop’s Committee for the year of 1999 and again in 2000 as the Stewardship chairperson. I dropped off in 2001 and came back on the committee in August of 2002. I have been very active in several leadership training programs that the Diocese has given as well as recently completing the Spiritual Journey Courses given by the St. Benedictines at the Center for Contemplative Living, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado, Denver. Course work covered Basic Centering Prayer, Human Condition and Spirituality in Everyday Life. The fall of 2002 I started volunteer work with the Kairos Prison Ministry and did my first Kairos #22 at the Delta Correctional Facility.

During my working years, I have been truly blessed to live and serve God in many places, ways and capacities. I wanted to extend my appreciation for these opportunities and since my retirement in July 2000, I do volunteer work in Moffat County and Craig. I trained and worked as a counselor for awhile in domestic and sexual abuse programs for the Advocates, Crisis Support Systems. Presently I am a trauma Counselor for the ACSS in their Moffat County Victims’ Assistance Program. I also work with troubled youth and young parents in the local elementary school system in the F.A.S.T. (Families and Schools Together) Program and serve as a Christian Contemplative Listener for the deeply troubled individuals.

It has been my goal to extend the Great Commission of Jesus to the poor, the afflicted, the destitute and the incarcerated. In my travels and experiences I have felt there is a great need to deepen the Spiritual Journey for many leaders who do work for Jesus in Carrying out his Great Commission. I find Cursillos to be one way to do this ministry. Peace and Goodwill to all for 2003.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU, cont.

KARLAN ROSENBERG

As Secretariat Three-Day Coordinator, I set up reservations for various camps and also find Rector/a for each weekend

I grew up in Iowa. After attending Kirkwood Community College, I moved to the Summit County Area in 1982.

I made my Cursillo in November 2001 at Camp Redcloud in Lake City. I attended Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon for about 12 years, prior to attending St. Johns Episcopal Church in Breckenridge for the past four years.

‘I love deadlines. I especially love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." Dilbert

To professional journalists—and I was one once-- deadlines are sacred. You never miss a deadline. Once, in a journalism class I taught, I told the students "the only way you can miss a deadline is to show me the bone poking through the skin on your arm." Two days later one of my students came in with a cast on his arm and said "Mrs. Hause, I tried to call you from the emergency room so you could come and see the bone coming out of the skin, but the doctor wouldn’t let me."

When will I learn? I have lectured all the contributors to Crowing Times about getting things in on time. I have sent mean e-mails and been generally annoying. Bernie Maly, who is in charge of communications for the Secretariat and is one of the nicest men on the planet, has sympathized with me and tried to help me. And, as a result, everything for the Spring issue of Crowing Times was here—on time.

And I tripped over my loving and extremely large black Labrador Retriever and fractured my wrist.

So the Spring Crowing Times is now the early Summer Crowing Times.

Attention to deadlines would be appreciated however and they are published in a box on page four.

A Cursillista’s Story

Spiritual Awakening Cursillo Style

By Becca Dooley, St. Martin in the Fields

A little about me--I am 30 years old, a cradle Episcopalian. I was active in youth group as a teen, I went to Happening and was an active member in Cursillo reunion groups even before the awakening I experienced in August of 2001 at Cursillo #104.

I thought I had a lot of things figured out, but the one thing I didn’t understand until Cursillo #104 is that God wanted me to help HIM and that there were a couple of things I had to do to make it all happen. First, I learned to LISTEN at Cursillo. Sometimes I was kicking and screaming, but God kept leading me down a path which I wasn’t sure I wanted to follow and listening was the key. Secondly, I learned to FOLLOW. This was a pretty hard step for me because God called me to prison ministry after I was retired in 2000 on a medical disability from a police officer position. I was convinced I couldn’t minister to the kind of people I once put in jail. Finally, Cursillo taught me to be ACTIVE on the path that God was leading me down.

As I said, I was called to prison ministry and this happened to be the very first weekend, in Colorado, for a ministry called Epiphany. Epiphany is a ministry for juveniles in prison and the three-day weekend is similar to Cursillo in basic format. I agreed to be on the first team in January 2002. As I got into my car to drive down to Pueblo on Thursday for commissioning and the start of the weekend I remember making a deal with the Lord. I said, "Lord, I know You want me to be a part of this, but I have to tell You I don’t think this is where I am supposed to be. I will give You this weekend but I’m not sure I can do more than that." Well the weekend was more awesome and more powerful than anything I had ever experienced. I met young men and women that had never experienced love, never had a birthday party and never had a chance to be children because of the lives they grew up in. By the end of the weekend I was pretty sure I wanted to have that feeling again so I agreed to be on the next team.

I can continue for the entire Newsletter about how awesome it is to be a part of this ministry, but for the sake of space I want to tell you where things are now.

January 2002-Recreation Director Epiphany #1

March 2002-elected to the State Epiphany Committee and elected National Representative for the State of Colorado

June of 2002-Assistant Lay Director Epiphany #2

July 2002-elected State Epiphany Chair for Colorado

September 2002-elected, on the National level, Secretary of the Executive Committee which oversees all Epiphany functions throughout the U.S. (and soon to be British Columbia)

January 2003-Lay Director Epiphany #3

May 2003-Advising Lay Director

August 2003-Cursillo #110 as a kitchen angel.

I am excited to be able to return to Cursillo with an understanding that God uses all of us in many different ways to share his teachings. I pray that everyone who has not learned to listen since Cursillo hear my story and start to hear what the Lord wants you to do. There are many ways we can share the love of the Lord and hopefully each and every one of you will go out and find one of them so we can continue to share the awesome power of our Lord Jesus Christ in as many venues as possible--even if it’s not where we think we should be. Remember to LISTEN, to FOLLOW and, whatever you do, be ACTIVE.

ECL WORKSHOP

The Episcopal Cursillo Leaders’ Workshop (ECLW), chaired by Martha Libby, was held at the Presbyterian Highlands retreat center near Allenspark on May 30-June 1. Four speakers from different parts of the country presented different aspects of the Cursillo Movement from sponsorship to "the authentic three day weekend,." to group reunion. The theme of the weekend was "back to basics" and involved an emphasis on just that—understanding what the real core of Cursillo is, particularly the fourth day.

Results of planning discussions for the future will be compiled and shared. Two areas of strong emphasis for the future seemed to be developing a servant community and creating a greater emphasis on fourth day activities and efforts.

COMMUNICATIONS CHAIRMAN

Bernie Maly, the communications chairman on the Secretariat, says that his "passion is to find Cursillo parish representatives for all diocesan parishes. I believe that can be an extremely powerful tool for effective communication, for encouragement of Cursillistas and for recruiting of sponsors, candidates and teams." In the parishes with a Cursillo representative, Bernie sends out a monthly letter with information about up coming Cursillo events.

Bernie, who has attended St Josephs in Lakewood for more than 20 years, made his Cursillo in the Roman Catholic Church in western Nebraska in the ‘70s. He was a single parent for many years, raising three sons. He has been married for eight years to Joy. Bernie has been involved in Cursillo, Kairos and Epiphany, a weekend for incarcerated youth. He and Joy were Rector and Rectora of Cursillo weekend #107 at Highlands camp in Allenspark.

Bernie is also very interested in promoting a servant community in the Diocese. The servant community, which is a larger group than Secretariat, could meet several times a year to do the work of supporting Cursillo "to enrich and make the movement more effective as well as provide visibility and a broader base of support." Anyone interested in a servant community or in being a parish representative should contact Bernie at the addresses listed below.
