Celebrating Our Continuing Spiritual Journey Spring, 2001
FIRST CURSILLO IN THE NEXT 1000 YEARS -CURSILLO #103, May 17-20
Since, way back when, we began counting our "A.D." time with the year "one" and not the year "00," the year 2001 actually begins the new millennium, no matter what went on in Times Square on December 31 of 2000! Accordingly, Cursillo #103 will be the first Colorado Cursillo of the next 1000 years! As all weekends are, though, it will be special in many other ways, too!
For one thing, we'll be trying out a brand new site for the Western Slope. Camp Red Cloud, a mere 18 minutes from beautiful downtown Lake City has never hosted a Cursillo weekend before. It's normally a Christian Youth Camp. The leadership and staff there seem really excited about our weekend. They're young and full of energy and the power of the Holy Spirit.
They couldn't believe that we didn't need their help to set out our own luminarios and clean up after ourselves at the end of the weekend. And of course, meal times will be flexible! And why would we have a noon checkout time on Sunday? And why would they charge us extra to use all the building and facilities? From the way things seem and sound, Camp Red Cloud may be an extraordinarily viable site for many future Cursillos!
As a very wise and spiritual friend of mine has been known to say with a twinkle in his eye, "The worst Cursillo I ever went to was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!" Please hold the Team and Candidates in your thoughts and prayers. Palanca is always welcomed, too!! Anyone and everyone is welcome and encouraged to come to our Las Mananitas and Clausura. And, if you happen to know of any potential Candidates . . .Well, you know . . .!
I'll tell you all about Colorado Cursillo #103 in an upcoming article.
DE COLORES AND ULTREYA!!!

LAY DIRECTOR'S CORNER:
By: Alan McPeak, Cursillo Lay Director for Diocese of Colorado
There are many really neat things about working on the Colorado Cursillo Secretariat. Probably one of the nicest is having Secretariat meetings all over the state, meeting Cursillistas in their home environments, and seeing what they are doing in their walks with Christ. The 27 January meeting was in Grand Junction at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church on a weekend with typical winter weather (it was snowing). We had the Secretariat meeting followed by an Ultreya and potluck dinner put on by the local Cursillo community. There was a really good turnout of over 50 people and a large music team. We were made to feel very welcome and the Secretariat very much appreciated the hospitality. In addition to the March and May Secretariat meetings listed on the front page, we will be attending the Las Mananitas and Clausura of Cursillo #103 on Sunday, May 20. The June meeting will be at ACRC on the Saturday of that weekend at 12 noon. The place of the meeting will be in the ACRC program. The 14 July meeting place will be set later and announced in the Summer Crowing Times.
Now, on to some of the things that have happened since the last Crowing Times. We have firmed up the dates for the August Cursillo #104, which will be 23-26 August at the Presbyterian Highlands Camp in Allenspark. The leaders for this Cursillo are Martha Libby from Aurora and Alan McPeak from Colorado Springs. The dates for the Four Corners area Cursillo #2 are 9-12 August. The lay leader for this Cursillo is Debbi Gregory. This is a joint Cursillo run by the servant community in the Four Corners area with coordination with the New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado Secretariats.
The best news of all is that we are definitely starting a fourth and new Cursillo in Southern Colorado which needs everyone's prayer and palanca support. We have gotten a lot of support from Cursillistas in this area but we need more to get this Cursillo off the ground. The Cursillo will be in the south central part of Colorado near Salida. The dates are 1-4 November at Camp Red Cloud near Lake City for Cursillo #105. We do not have a Lay Leader for this Cursillo as this is written but we are praying that someone will step forward to lead. We will need team members and candidates for this Cursillo, so consider if you may serve or be a sponsor.
We have started working on a web page for Colorado Cursillo. Bishop Winterrowd was kind enough to offer to have the Cursillo web page hosted on the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado Web page. We are in the process of designing the contents of the page, and should have something up by next summer. If you have any suggestions about the web page, or wish to volunteer to be the coordinator, please contact me directly or send me an e-mail. My address is listed with the Secretariat members. We plan to put the latest Crowing Times, work application and sponsorship forms, Secretariat members, and Ultreya information and contacts on the web page so people can get the latest information and latest forms easily. This will also provide a forum for new people in Colorado to get information on Cursillo. Many of the Cursillistas here made their Cursillo somewhere else and, right now, we don't have a good way to find out about them to get them on the mailing list. As an example, approximately half of the last August Cursillo #102 team made their Cursillos somewhere else. You can all help by sending in addresses and phone numbers of new-to-Colorado Cursillistas you meet in your churches to have them added to the Cursillo mailing list. Joan Stewart in Grand Junction now keeps our membership database. She also does the mailing of the Crowing Times. If you want to update your address or phone number, you can call Joan at (970)585-8015 or send her an e-mail at klbmail@rmi.net and give her the updated information. We appreciate your keeping your address up to date because a return from the US Post Office cost $0.55 each, which is a great deal more than the $0.12 that it cost to send it in the first place.
The dates and places are set for the National Episcopal Cursillo Seminars (NECS) in 2001. They will be held at the Camp Allen Conference Center in Navasota, Texas, 24-28 October with the Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold as keynote speaker. I hope a lot of Cursillistas from Colorado will be able to attend. Please contact me for information about this event or with any other questions or suggestions you may have at: Internet mcpeakal@earthlink.net or by snail mail at 2240 Cloverdale Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80920.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Biographies of two more secretariat members:
Jim Phillips is chairman of special events. (See the article below about the ACRC snack bar.) "I began my service on the Secretariat in 1998 and have served exclusively in the Special Events position. This position is most closely identified as the person who runs the snack bar at ACRC. Recently the responsibility of maintaining a binder of Cursillo work applications (see page ) has been included. My early Christian life was spent as a boy chorister in the choir at St. John's Cathedral in Denver in the 1950s. After high school I just drifted away from the church and did not get the "wake-up" call until 1978 at which time I became an active church goer. I eventually made my Cursillo at Aspen in 1997, worked the Cedaredge Cursillo in 1998 and was invited to run for the Secretariat. I will be looking forward to seeing and greeting all the Cursillistas attending ACRC this summer."
About the Snack Bar:
The ACRC snack bar is the major fund raising activity for Colorado Episcopal Cursillo. Income from the snack bar is used to fund Secretariat activities, including publication of the Crowing Times, Cursillo scholarships and sending a Colorado Cursillo representative to the annual national convention. Servant Community participation is done in two ways: volunteering time during ACRC at the snack bar and/or offering of items for sale at the snack bar. Most popular are beverage items: bottled water, soft drinks, flavored water or fruit drinks in 12-packs or cases. The popular snack items include homemade baked goods, dried fruit and crunchy snacks, all in individual serving portions. These can be dropped off at the snack bar when registering for ACRC. If you will not be attending the conference but want to pr4ovide items, send them with someone who will be there. We are looking forward to help in furthering the Cursillo movement in Colorado.
Marj Rust is assistant lay director. "De Colores! I'm Marj Rust and if you have had any involvement with Cursillo on the Eastern Slope in the last nine years, our paths have probably crossed in some way. Since I edited the Crowing Times for two years, if nothing else you have read my articles and seen my name. For the rest of you, when I made my Cursillo in '92 (the last one at the Bethlehem Center) this ministry truly called to me. I live on a mountain top west of Denver so my life is a Mountain Top Experience:>) I attend St. John Chrysostom in Applewood (Golden.) I have only been an Episcopalian for 10 years, so I am truly a "work in progress." Cursillistas and my congregation at St. J.C. are my family since I have outlived everyone in my family and have not been married. Two little dogs let me live with them and I am a "computer addict." I teach Online for the University of Phoenix to students all over the world, so that enables me to "travel" without leaving home. :<) My e-mail address is listed on the Secretariat list on page , so if you would like to say "Hi!" I'd love to hear from you . . .God Bless."
Assistant Lay Director of Secretariat: Cursillo is planned so that each of us can experience positions before we may want to serve in them. This starts with Team activities all the way through Secretariat. The role of the Assistant Lay Director is to do just that: assist the Lay Director. As anyone who has been to Cursillo knows there are many facets to the Weekend. But how many of us think of what must have gone on before the weekend? Th e Secretariat meets and works throughout the year to keep God's plan in operation. The Lay Director of Secretariat carries a great deal of responsibility so the lay director picks up the loose ends so to speak.
CURSILLO #104 - AUGUST 23-26
By Martha Libby
Fear not for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine." Isaiah 43:1The weekend will be held at Highlands Presbyterian Camp in Allenspark, August 23-26, 2001. The core team is currently meeting to pray and discern God's will for this time. We are accepting applications for team members. Anyone desiring to participate as a team member should check at his or her church to obtain an application. If applications are unavailable, please contact Joan Stewart at (970)243-9842. She can also be reached at 1341 Cedar Ave., Grand Junction, 81501; e-mail: Klbmail@rmi.net.
Martha Libby and Alan McPeak will be the Lay Directors for the weekend with Jim Talman serving as Assistant Lay Director. Clive and Molly Bonner have agreed to serve as Head Kitchen Angels. Linda McPeak is the Music Director with Debbie Wilson assisting. Father Praveen Bunyan is the Spiritual Director.
This weekend will also have a new group of team members. This team is called the "Cha-Cha" Team. C-H-A stands for Cheerful, Helpful, Available. This team is responsible for support of the Rollo Room and palanca while the Kitchen Angels are responsible for support of all activities having to do with food. Our hope is this will give those hard working support people some time to rest. Our Head Cha-Chas are Nancy and Rich Hause.
Please begin praying for the Team and Candidates for the weekend. Ask God to prepare the Team and to stir the hearts of those He would call as candidates.
WORKING A CURSILLO
Working a Cursillo is the most rewarding activity a Cursillista will experience. Assisting and guiding those on their three-day journey fulfills the worker's desire to be a servant for Christ in a way that is truly uplifting. With the addition of a third planned Cursillo for the Colorado Diocese this year, the demand for Cursillistas to work them could become critical if an adequate pool is not maintained. Every Cursillo strives to use an equal number of experienced and inexperienced Cursillistas and all are selected from worker applications on file with the Cursillo Secretariat. As determination of team make up for the August 200l Cursillo will begin shortly, now is the time for Cursillistas to complete a team application (printed in the winter Crowing Times) and get it submitted to the Secretariat. Copies of all applications on file are provided to the Cursillo Lay Director for team consideration and, if selected, will be contacted to join the team. If not selected, the application will remain on file for consideration for successive Cursillos. Applications for those who do serve on a team will not remain on file, and, if future service on a team is desired, a new application will have to be submitted. Applications can be obtained from the parish secretary, Secreta, other Cursillistas or by contacting Secretariat member Jim Phillips.
LUNCH WITH GOD
A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of root beer and started his journey. When had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink of his root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry so he offered her a Twinkie. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty that he wanted to see it again, so her offered her a root beer. Again she smiled at him. The boy was delighted. They sat there all afternoon, eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As it grew dark, the little boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps he turned around, ran back to the woman and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever.
When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was glad he was home but surprised by the look of joy on his face. Rather than scold him for being gone so long, she asked "What did you do today that made you so happy? He replied, "I had lunch with God. You know what? She's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!"
Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, "Mother what did you do today that made you so happy?" She replied "I ate lunch with God. You know what? He's much younger than I expected."
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally! (From The Epistle, St. Paul's Church, Manhattan, KS)
FROM THE EDITOR . . .
It is snowing in Estes Park, so it's a little hard to realize that this is already the spring issue of Crowing Times . There is so much going on in the Cursillo community that time flies by. With four Cursillos coming up in the next seven months, Secretariat meetings every other month (including the Secretariat retreat in Lake City,) and the annual meeting at the Annual Christian Renewal Conference (ACRC) at Snow Mountain Ranch in June, keeping up with Cursillo in Colorado is like running after a house full of teen-agers. As the Red Queen said in Alice in Wonderland, "I have to run as fast as I can just to stay in the same place." But isn't it wonderful that there is such energy and enthusiasm in this diocese! Please keep letting us know what's going on in your particular part of the Cursillo community. And thank you for the donations that keep coming in.
Your Sister in Christ, Nancy Hause
Los Regalos position filled: Scott Stewart from Grand Junction has volunteered to take on the job of managing the retail sales of Cursillo materials. Many thanks.
There are still two jobs for volunteers: Librarian for the Secretariat, who updates the Leaders' notebooks and orders supplies from National and a Contact Person to be the contact point for the layout but not the programming of the Cursillo web page that will be on the Colorado Episcopal Diocesan home page.
